Located east of Hartford, our State's capital city, Tolland County is an interesting blend of country and suburban living, with convenient access to many New England cities.
* Tolland County is home to approximately 150,000 people. That's a larger population than any major city in Connecticut.
* The Tolland County labor force is ~84,000 people (~5% of Connecticut's labor force)
* 78,000 people in the Tolland County labor force are employed, giving the County an "employment rate" of ~93% and an unemployment rate of ~7%.
* Tolland County has ~3,000 worksites employing ~41,000 people, for an average of 14 workers per worksite.
* Tolland County has 12 banking institutions with 42 total branches and combined deposits of $2.1 billion. Our largest "home grown" bank is Rockville Bank, which is the 7th largest in-state bank with deposits of ~$1.0 billion. Rockville Bank ranks #22 in small business lending in Connecticut. * The State's 5th largest daily newspaper, the Journal Inquirer, is based about two miles from the Tolland County border in Manchester. Weekday circulation is ~36,000; weekend circulation is ~39,000. Our TV show host, Drew Crandall, writes a column in the Journal Inquirer called "An Encouraging Word."
* The State's largest university is based in Tolland County. The University of Connecticut in Storrs has 30,000 students, 78% of whom are Connecticut residents. Drew Crandall, show host, is a UConn/Storrs graduate himself!
* The State's largest community college, Manchester Community College, is located just a few miles from the County border. MCC has 10,000 students. Our TV show host, Drew Crandall, serves on the MCC Communications Committee.
* Four Tolland County businesses were nominated for 2009 "Business Champion" awards: Control Station in Tolland, ImageWorks in Vernon, Munson's Chocolates in Bolton, and David Palzej Eye Care in Stafford Springs. Over the years, 3 out of 4 of these companies--Control Station, ImageWorks, and Munson's--have been on our show!
* Founded in 1957, the Tolland County Chamber of Commerce is the 10th largest Chamber in Connecticut, with 400 members. We have collaborated closely with the Chamber since the TV show began in 2005. Both our producer, Carl Slicer, and host, Drew Crandall, are long-time Chamber members. Drew served on the Chamber Board for six years, and his company designed the current logo/slogan when the Chamber rebranded in the mid-1990s.
* The Easter Seals Society of CT, based in Hebron, is the 15th largest health and human services non-profit in the Hartford region with revenue of ~$15 million, about 1,000 volunteers and 240 employees.
* Tolland County is home to the 12th and 13th largest hospitals in the State, Rockville General (102 beds) and Johnson Memorial (92 beds). Both hospitals have been featured on our TV show.
* Curiously, Tolland County is home to 6 of the top 25 public golf courses in the Hartford region based on "slope of farthest tee." Blackledge in Hebron (#7), Cedar Knob in Somers (#13), Rolling Meadows in Ellington (#14), Skungamaug River in Coventry (#21), Tallwood in Hebron (#22) and Twin Hills in Coventry (#24).
* CNC Software in Tolland is the 7th largest software developer in the Hartford region, employing 116 people. Mark Summers, its founder and president, has been on our TV show.
